How barydata works

Storage without a center, in plain words.

Sending a file

Pick your files and you have a link the same second, while the upload is still running. Send the link to anyone; they can start downloading right away, even before you have finished sending. No account, no software to install, nothing to configure.

Your files are locked before they leave

Before a file leaves your computer, your browser locks it with a key made right there. The key travels only inside the link, after the # sign — a part of a web address that browsers never send to any server. What reaches us is scrambled pieces we cannot read. Only someone holding your link can put the file back together, and the unscrambling happens in their browser, not on our machines.

Pieces, not copies

The locked file is cut into pieces and scattered across several machines — a shell of storage around an invisible center. Every piece is stored on more than one machine. When someone opens your link, their browser pulls pieces from many machines at once and reassembles the file, which is why downloads are fast: every machine serves a little, and no single machine carries the whole thing.

Machines come and go; the network expects that. When one drops out, its pieces are copied somewhere else automatically. No single machine matters, and no machine that holds pieces can read them.

Links, not lockers

barydata is for sharing, not for backup. You choose how long a link lives, from 1 to 30 days, and when it ends the pieces are gone from every machine that held them. Before sending, you verify a mobile number or an email address, and it is recorded with every link you create — links are traceable to their sender, which keeps the service honest.

Where this is going

barydata is built to become a storage network anyone can join: run a small program, offer some spare disk space, and your machine becomes part of the shell — holding scrambled pieces of other people's files that it can never read, while the network holds yours. The more machines join, the faster and tougher the whole thing gets.

Contributing storage is not open yet. While we finish building, the network runs on our own machines. When everything is up, joining will open here.
